A Comprehensive Addiction Treatment Guide

Learning About Addiction Therapy Options

By the time you are ready to get help with your addiction, you may not know where to start. You may be at rock bottom, and you may not know what steps to take to get out of it. You may know you need addiction treatment, but you may not have any idea where to begin or who to ask.
Fortunately, you have many choices for addiction treatment to get the help you need. Here’s a brief overview to help you learn more about your addiction therapy options:

Types of Addiction Treatment

Many different treatment options are available, depending on where you are in your recovery and what kind of program you feel would work best for you. Some of the options include:

People having group therapy during their addiction treatment

Detox is what most people call the initial few days or more that it takes for your body to get through the intense withdrawal symptoms of the drugs or alcohol you were abusing. Some detox programs may just monitor you during this process to guard against dangerous reactions from the withdrawal; others will provide medication to help you manage the symptoms.

Residential Treatment

Residential addiction treatment can include detox, as well as ongoing addiction counseling and other services. There is wide variation in what is offered between residential treatment programs.

Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient treatment allows people to get the services they need and then go to their home each night. They may come for individual counseling, group meetings, medication administration, and more.

What Happens during Treatment?

What happens during treatment depends on what kind of treatment you get. If you are going through detox, expect to stay in a Mesa addiction clinic for the duration. If you are withdrawing from heroin or similar narcotics, you may be able to get medication therapy from a suboxone doctor to ease you through the withdrawal symptoms and prevent a potentially life-threatening response.

In residential treatment, you will stay at a treatment facility for the duration of the program, which would last anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, depending on the facility. Your days will be filled with individual and group counseling, family treatment, and even wellness services. You may also get medication therapy and monitoring.

Outpatient treatment can include some of these same services, but you would schedule them around work or other responsibilities, and you would return to your home each day.

How Long is Treatment?

The length of a treatment program really just depends on the facility. Many inpatient programs last around 30 days, though there are programs that last as much as 90 days. There are also shorter programs that last about a week.

It’s important that you first come to some understanding about what kind of treatment you might need and then find a program that offers the appropriate length.

Finding the Right Treatment Center

There are many addiction clinics and drug treatment centers around most cities. You should take your time learning about them so you can find the one that will fit your needs the best and give you the highest chance of success. You may feel like you don’t have that kind of time when you are in crisis and ready to get help. You should ask a family member or loved one to help you with this process, which can include researching the offerings, checking reviews, and finding out about insurance coverage.

Know that even after your initial treatment program ends, you will need to get ongoing addiction therapy if you are to be successful in maintaining your sobriety. You will need to continue getting addiction counseling to work through the issues that led to your addiction, as well as the issues created by your addiction. You’ll need to learn how to manage your triggers, healthy ways to manage your emotions, how to set boundaries, and more. Recovery is a process, and it will last your whole life.
